Pyuria (leukocyturia) is a typical sign of urinary tract infections and is usually accompanied by bacteriuria in the urinesediment. In sterile (abacterial) pyuria, there is no finding of bacteriuria in the urine sediment and the urine culture isnegative. As a matter of fact, sterile pyuria is not rare and occurs in the population in 14 % of women and 3 % of men. Thearticle deals with the most frequent causes of sterile pyuria and briefly presents the basic diagnostic options within thedifferential diagnosis.
