Transrectal sonography in diagnosis of prostatic diseases

Ultrasonography using transrectally introduced probe (TRUS) allows evaluation of ultrasonic anatomy of the prostate and adjacent

organs. TRUS is also helpful in measurement of prostatic volume, assesment of different diffuse or focal abnormalities and performing

prostatic biopsy. Ultrasonographic evaluation plays limited role in the diagnosis of some entities (prostatitis syndrome) but

it is essential in the others (bladder outlet obstruction, tumors). Knowledge of the findings in different conditions can be helpful

in making differential diagnoses. Article provides overview of the current status and possible future developments of this method.
