Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common cause of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Genital warts (condylomata accuminata, venereal warts) are the most easily recognized sign of genital HPV infection. Many people, however, have a genital HPV infection without genital warts. Infection with certain types of HPV can cause the development of dysplastic epithelial leasions and urogenital malignities (cervical cancer, vulvar cancer, penile cancer, anal cancer). It is possible to diagnose genital warts just by seeing them. Subclinical leasions (invisible warts) can be identified by applying vinegar (acetic acid). The best diagnostic method...

Erectile dysfunction after pelvic floor operation. Current therapy - penile rehabilitation

MUDr. Martin Sutorý, CSc

Urolog. pro Praxi, 2009; 10(6): 328-331

Because of the damage to the neurovascular pathways after pelvic floor operation, patients lose their natural nocturnal erections. This results in decrease in average pO2 tension of the penis tissue and in fast development of fibrosis, which is the cause of venous leak that fixates erectile dysfunction. Penile rehabilitation, for which there are no fixed rules yet, is designed to increase pO2 in the penis so that the penile tissue is maintained until spontaneous erection occurs. Chronic dosing of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (iPDE5) is commonly used as the basis of therapy. Intracavernously applied prostaglandin E1 (PGE-1) is a possible alternative...

In type 1 diabetes, there is an absolute insulin deficiency caused by an autoimmune inflammation which affects pancreatic B-cells. The surveillance of type 1 diabetes patients involves mimicking the physiological insulin secretion pattern (basal–bolus) using an intensified insulin regimen or insulin pump. In addition to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes also involves impaired insulin secretion with a relative insulin deficiency. The surveillance of type 2 diabetes patients requires repeated assessment of the mutual...

Basic features of acute renal failure

doc. MUDr. Miroslav Merta CSc

Urolog. pro Praxi, 2009; 10(6): 347-350

Acute renal failure (or acute kidney injury as it is now referred to in the literature) is a clinical syndrome characterized by a sudden decline in renal function associated with retention of nitrogenous substances and other catabolites. It is a serious condition associated with significant morbidity/mortality. The prognosis of acute renal failure is closely dependent on the causative factor, the degree of renal damage at diagnosis, and the quality of treatment provided. An early diagnosis and prompt provision of appropriate care can favourably affect a large number of acute renal failure cases and reduce the risk of acute clinical complications...

Bladder removal (radical cystectomy) is mostly performed in the case of a bladder tumour. The function of the bladder has to be substituted, most commonly with a segment of the small intestine. During the Bricker operation (ureteroileostomy), the ureters are connected to an excluded loop of the small intestine that is brought to the surface of the abdomen (ostomy) and a collection bag is attached to the surrounding skin.
