Infections of external genitalia can be cause be a number of pathogens. One of the most serious is Neisseria gonorrhoeae. If an ulcer is found on external genitalia in females, especially syphilis must be excluded. Differentiation between craurosis vulvae and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus is based mainly on histology. Viral diseases are best treated with aimed systemic or topical antiviral therapy.
