Recurrent urinary tract infections and cystinuria

We present a case of a 14-year-old female patient with cystine lithiasis. At the age of 8 months she had her first febrile urinary infection. Furthermore, she had no clinical signs of infection, but pyuria and significant bacteriuria were repeatedly detected. She was treated with antibiotics for these findings. In the absence of clinical difficulties parents refused further investigation of the patient. The diagnosis was made at the age of 12 by cystine crystals in the urine sediment, followed by evidence of cystinuria with nephrolithiasis. After the surgical intervention, dietary and medical treatment continues, with the patient free from pyuria and bacteriuria.
