The article reviews data about a number of historical circumstances related to selected urologic diseases and examination and treatment
of the latter since the ancient Egyptian, Palestinian, Greek and Roman era. A survey of prominent medical practitioners of the time is
provided, focusing on clinical experience in urology and on the performance of cystolithotomy. The subsequent part of the article deals
with urological procedures as performed in medieval and early modern Europe. Initial attempts to establish urology on scientific principles
are related to chemical urinalysis (beginning with the second half of the 18th century). Construction of simple cystoscopic devices
in the early 19th century is reported as another significant breakthrough.
