The Czech Republic has the highest incidence of renal cell carcinoma worldwide. In 10–15 % of patients, the presence of a tumor thrombus

is demonstrated at the time of diagnosis. The authors focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of locally advanced renal cell

carcinoma with a tumor thrombus. Two case reports are presented showing different course of the disease. The prognosis is affected

neither by the clinical condition of the patient, nor the extent of the tumor thrombus. If distant metastases are not present and the

whole tumor thrombus is removed during surgery, this condition is curable.
