Před pětaosmdesáti lety, 7. listopadu 1918, se narodil prof. MUDr. Jan Kučera, DrSc., jeden ze zakladatelů československé urologie, první přednosta a zakladatel Urologické kliniky FN a Katedry urologie LF UP v Olomouci. Jako olomoucký rodák se po maturitě na Slovanském gymnáziu rozhodl pro studium lékařství. Vysokoškolská studia mu však, jako mnoha jiným, přerušila nacistická okupace. Během II. světové války se od medicíny neodloučil, po otevření vysokých škol urychleně skládal zkoušky a studia ukončil promocí na LF MU v Brně dne 4. 4. 1946. Od 1. 6. 1946 nastoupil jako sekundární lékař nově ustavené chirurgické kliniky. Již koncem roku 1948 se pracovitý a snaživý MUDr. Jan Kučera stává odborným asistentem. Má právě 30 let, věnuje se všeobecné chirurgii se zaměřením na urologii, která se postupně stává jeho koníčkem. V r. 1955 je prvním docentem, habilitovaným na klinice prof. Rapanta a je pověřen vedením jejího urologického pracoviště.
