Female urethral diverticulum and the symptoms of the lower urinary tract dysfunction

Often unrecognized or incorrectly diagnosed, female urethral diverticulum may be completely asymptomatic or may produce significant symptomathology such as recurrent urinary tract infections, dyspareunia, dysuria, urgency, frequency, hematuria, postmicturition dribbling and different types of urinary incontinence. Voiding cystourethrography, positive pressure urethrography, urethroscopy or introital ultrasonography are used in the examination of patients with a diverticulum. Complete excision of the diverticulum is the most successful treatment modality with minimum postoperative complications. Concomitant bladder neck suspension is recommended in women with diverticulum and stress incontinence.
