Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) without clinical signs is a common clinical condition. It is usual in patients with urinary catheters and in patients with pathology of urinary tracts. The occurrence of ABU increases with age and is more pronounced in women. It is usually not treated and often disappears spontaneously. The administration of antimicrobial therapy to patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria should always be assessed on a case-by-case basis to avoid unnecessary burdensome treatment. According to current recommendations, we specifically search for and treat ABU in patients undergoing surgical procedures that affect the mucosa of the urinary tract and in pregnancy.
