Normální funkce každého organizmu je odvislá od regulace počtu buněk a to jak v období jeho růstu, tak i v období jeho -běžné- funkčnosti, stejně jako ve stadiu involuce - stárnutí. Zásadní význam má zde mechanizmus, který přirozeným způsobem zajišťuje rovnováhu mezi proliferačními procesy cestou mitózy a procesem, který eliminuje buňky nežádoucí, nebo patologicky změněné. Tomuto jevu říkáme apoptóza (z řeckého apoptosis - padání - přirovnání k opadávání listí na podzim).
